This is a famous photo of wake vortex study, showing the air flow from an agricultural plane. The circulation of air at the tip of the wing, also known as tip vortex. Tip vortices is powerful enough to effect the flow field of the aircraft behind it. This is the major reason why airports maintain a safe distance between airplanes during take-off and landing. This is the beauty of experimental fluid dynamics. Click here for more information on this study.

Welcome to the wonderful word of fluidic! Fluid dynamics is fun and interesting. Our daily life is surrounded by the fluid interactions. I will be sharing these interesting phenomena in the near future. Enjoy!

Ever try to drop a mint Mentos into a bottle of diet coke? It is an explosive experience. An unopened diet coke is filled with carbon dioxide that gives the sensation of a carbonated beverage. The sugar coat of a mint Mentos actually breaks down the surface tension of the liquid, enabling the carbon dioxide to escape. Each Mentos consists of thousand of pores, a perfect site for carbon dioxide bubbles to form. Thus, when a few Mentos are dropped into a bottle of diet coke, a “Mentos Eruption” will happen.
